MANA Provides Online Information on Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter Control

Raleigh, NC (July 17, 2007) – Makhteshim Agan of North America, Inc., (MANA) recently launched a new section on its website to provide growers and consultants with up-to-date information on glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) status and control.

MANA has posted news for researchers, crop consultants and farm advisors about the spread and treatment of GWSS on its website along with information on Alias™ 2F insecticide, which with contains the same active ingredient as Admire®. The site,, also provides links to other helpful resources with the latest on GWSS numbers and research.

GWSS is a significant pest in California that can transmit Pierce’s disease in grapevines, leaf scorch in almonds and many other diseases in key California crops. "Sharpshooter Rain," the fluid secreted by sharpshooters as they voraciously feed, can reduce the market value of a variety of citrus fruits. Five California counties where GWSS have been found in recent years are now under area-wide management programs to trap and treat the pests because of potentially damaging widespread effects.

"MANA is committed to the control of glassy-winged sharpshooter in California, not only by supplying Alias 2F, the premier insecticide available, but also by providing information growers, consultants and others can turn to for help in controlling these pests," said Brian Ahrens, MANA senior product manager for insecticides.

In 2006, amid a spike in GWSS pressures, Alias 2F, the only 2-pound formulation available, was used extensively for treatment and protection throughout the state. A cooler winter this past year, coupled with aggressive detection and preventative treatments through area-wide management programs, has helped reduce GWSS pressures so far in 2007.
